Tell Me a Story: a Piano Recital by Michael Arnowitt
Capital City Concerts wanted Michael Arnowitt to perform on one of the finest pianos in Vermont, so they are opening their popular Montpelier-based concert series at the Barre Opera House. Michael Arnowitt is an American pianist who lived in Montpelier for 32 years before moving to Toronto last year. He is beloved for his artistry, original programming, and for integrating music into important activist endeavors. Michael will treat us to a big, bold, beautiful piano concert of musical story-telling in a program which includes Schumann's Op. 12 Fantasy Pieces, a landmark work of early Romanticism, which includes a depiction of Aesop's fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. He'll play Prokofiev's dazzling Piano No. 7 Sonata, one of the most exciting pieces of piano music ever written, as well as Chopin's Ballade in F minor, the last and greatest of his four. Michael will also perform his own arrangement of the poetic "Cavatina" movement of Beethoven's String Quartet in B-flat major for solo piano. (A recording of this piece is the final selection on the "Golden Record" placed on the Voyager spacecraft sent into outer space in 1977.) To close the program, Michael will perform Lowell Liebermann's devilish Gargoyles ~ one of the most talked about piano compositions in recent decades. Don't miss this chance to welcome Michael home and then join us afterward for a festive reception in his honor!
